Rascals Music Review
Rascals is an upcoming comedy directed by David Dhawan, starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn as con-men competing to win the affections of Kangna Ranaut’s character. Described in the promotional material as a “mega-comedy”, if you’ve seen any of the trailers or even the poster, you’ll know immediately if the film is worth your pocket money: David Dhawan’s brash and energetic, super-colourful, super-loud, in your face brand of comedy isn’t for everyone, but it undoubtedly has its fans.
Vishal-Shekar have certainly created a soundtrack to fit the Dhawan brief with the Rascals soundtrack – and by that, I mean that this album is basically an onslaught of high-energy noise from start to finish.
The short album consists of four original tracks and two remixes; the entire album is heavily hip-hop and dance based. It’s definitely not one for old-school Hindi film music purists or fans of the rustic desi style currently making a resurgence.
The title song sung by Neeraj Shridhan is…well, it’s what you expect from the title song in a David Dhawan film. It’s high energy and pounding and repetitive, and it’s full of funny sound effects, and a verse sung in chipmunk voices. It will either be hilarious while and after seeing the film (and this is totally the point of a song like this – it’s not really meant to be listened to in isolation, it’s meant to introduce the characters) or you will absolutely never – and I mean NEVER – want to hear this track ever again, unless you are actively trying to drive people out of your house.
Just in case you DO have an odd urge to not only listen to the title track but actually get up and dance to it, the album includes Rascals (Dance Mix), which mercifully eliminates all the gimmicky effects (and the chipmunks) in favour of Neeraj Shridhan singing it properly over a paced up dancey backing.
Pardaah Nasheen is a pounding, percussive wall of sound from the get-go, with Neeraj Shridhar belting out his vocals anthemically over the thumping, repetitive beats. Sunidhi Chauhan features all too briefly, adding a touch of sweetness – and we get the hint, all too clearly: this album is meant to be played full volume.
There’s some crazy mixing going on in Tik Tuk – and I actually kind of like this one! There’s a hint of a bhangra beat and desi drums mixed in with choppy dance synths, sirens, sweet vocal samples from Monali Thakur and hip hop. Daler Mehndi’s repetitive staccato refrain anchors this hot, hypnotic mess, which might not be massy enough to be a huge hit but might just be different enough to make waves.
If I’m honest, I have to say I found the rap in Shake It Saiyyan off-putting. Personally, I prefer the hiphop in the Breakaway soundtrack, which features some desi AND international hiphop integrated pretty seamlessly into a Hindi soundtrack. Hearing the awkward sounding rap in this track was like hearing a audible step backwards. The rest of the track is sparsely instrumented, thumping, loud, Sunidhi Chauhan sounds like she’s singing at the top of her comfortable range for a lot of it, and the overall effect is just kind of grating. I just didn’t like this one at all.
There’s a “Hip Hop Remix” of the song is…misnamed, and manages to be even more irritating with the addition of handclaps and synthesisers. I basically never want to hear anyone ever implore me to “Swag it out” ever again.
The Rascals soundtrack might be perfectly suited to the movie, and it might be ideal music for when you need some energetic background noise – but it’s ultimately filler. There’s not a lot of depth, originality or heart to it: in the end, it is just noise.
A horribly disappointing effort from the normally solid Vishal-Shekhar; here’s hoping they saved their A game for Ra.One.

Shah Rukh Khan's expensive bike gifts to Sanjay Dutt
Shah Rukh Khan's expensive bike gifts to Sanjay Dutt |
Shah Rukh Khan is in a generous mood. On Sunday, he also presented Sanjay Dutt with a cruiser motorcycle costing over Rs 15 lakh.
Says an eyewitness from the sets, "When SRK approached Sanju for a cameo in Ra.One, he immediately agreed but refused to discuss money for the part. Touched by his gesture, Khan wanted to do something special for him in return."
Sanju's passion for bikes is well-known, so SRK decided to get him one as a token of appreciation. Reveals the source, "Dutt had been enquiring about a particular Italian model, so SRK arranged for the custom-made bike to be imported direct from Italy. What's interesting is that Dutt had bought some biking gear including a helmet, jacket and gloves of the Italian company from South Africa a few months ago, but didn't buy the bike due to custom problems." Shah Rukh also gifted Dutt an expensive watch along with the bike. Says Dutt, "I really appreciate what Shah Rukh has done. It's a thoughtful gesture."

Baddie Sanjay Dutt goes bald for his forthcoming ‘Agneepath’
Sanjay Dutt sports a bald look for his forthcoming ‘Agneepath’ and uptil now the actor was using a prosthetic makeup for his looks. However, while shooting for the flick in Diu, the actor faced a serious problem of his makeup melting down in the searing 48 degrees heat of Diu.
This turned out to be a serious problem as the prosthetic makeup actually takes nearly three hours to apply and at least one and a half hour to get it removed. In fact, Sanjay had to wake up at 5 am to get his makeup ready for the shoot at 9 30 am. Also, the heavy prosthetic makeup was causing a strain on his eyes.
As a solution to this problem, Sanjay finally decided to shave off his head for this movie and use wigs for the other movies he was shooting for. He has hired the renowned wig maker of Hollywood, Victoria Wood, to design a perfect wig for him for his other films.
Dutt says, “I couldn’t have handled the make-up mess after a point. It was too tiring. Also, it was a strain on my eyes as prosthetic make-up is heavy.”

Bollywood News: Madhuri-Sanjay Dutt, Back on Satte Pe Satta Remake
Bollywood Actress Madhuri Dixit has finally been signed on for the film Satte Pe Satta remake, which is co-produced by Actor Sanjay Dutt. It’s been ages since the two have worked together and no one could have ever thought that Sanjay and Madhuri will share screen space again.
Sanjay, who was very keen to have Aishwarya in the film, asked Madhuri to step in because director Soham Shah wanted her. While announcing the film, Soham is quoted as saying, “I was always keen on Madhuri playing Hema Malini’s role in my remake…Looks like someone up there was listening because Dhillin Mehta and Baba (Sanjay) who are co-producers sent Madhuri a message. I sent her the script and I was ecstatic when she agreed.”
Now, the movie will go on floors soon. Earlier, it was reported that Sanjay has postponed the film to 2012, but with Madhuri on board thinkgs are back on fast track. Co-producer Dhillin Mehta is also in seventh heaven and he puts his feeling in words by saying, “Honestly, the Sanjay-Madhuri pair has its own charm. We are delighted that we were able to get her to say yes to us.”
The film was announced yesterday on Madhuri’s birthday. Together Sanjay-Madhuri have given several hits like Saajan and Khalyanak.

KNOCK OUT : Movie Review by Taran Adarsh
KNOCK OUT is a watchable fare, but its English title and also Sanjay Dutt's box-office pull, which is minimal currently, will act as deterrents. Therefore, the film will require a very strong word of mouth to find a foothold.
Several factors compel you to ponder over your decision whether or not to watch KNOCK OUT...
* There's talk that KNOCK OUT is a blatant copy of PHONE BOOTH. If you've watched the original, why watch its clone?
* You rush to a nearby cineplex only if the film excites you and in this case, the buzz is missing.
* Sanjay Dutt - the lead actor - hasn't been a part of a worthy film, post MUNNABHAI. That automatically robs the sheen from the film.
You can't turn a blind eye to the fact that KNOCK OUT borrows from PHONE BOOTH. Even otherwise, a man held hostage in a telephone booth by a sniper automatically compels you to think that PHONE BOOTH is the prime source of inspiration, but what follows after a point bears no resemblance to that film. In fact, KNOCK OUT also bears an uncanny resemblance to A WEDNESDAY, although the two films are as diverse as chalk and cheese in terms of how the storyline progresses.
KNOCK OUT is a thriller that keeps you hooked at regular intervals. The best thing about the film is that it remains focused to the plot and there are no deviations [thankfully!] in terms of songs, comedy or any other parallel track. Of course, there are hiccups, but the finale and the message it conveys camouflages the defects largely.
Final word? If one goes with minimal expectations, chances are you may like this film.
KNOCK OUT takes place almost entirely inside a public phone booth on a busy street. Bachchu aka Tony Khosla [Irrfan] uses the phone booth to carry out all the odd jobs he's into. After one such call, when Irrfan is about to leave the phone booth, the phone rings and he instinctively picks it up. On the other end of the line is a menacing caller [Sanjay Dutt].
The voice demands that Irrfan stay in the phone booth or else, the caller would destroy his marriage [Rukhsaar plays Irrfan's wife] and ruin his reputation of an investment banker. Irrfan tries to hang up the phone, but the voice on the phone threatens to kill him. Stuck in the phone booth, he's forced to ward off anyone who tries to get him out, including a drug addict.
The drug addict is shot dead by the caller and the police as well as the media arrive on the scene. The caller makes Bachchu dance to his tunes for a valid reason.
Come to think of it, KNOCK OUT is a difficult film to execute because the two characters - Sanju and Irrfan - never cross paths, except for a fleeting moment towards the end. In fact, they are constantly talking to each other over phone. Now watching a man trapped in a phone booth [for the entire film] could make the viewer restless. But the engaging screenplay and the energetic pacing keeps the viewer on toes. You just don't know what to expect next, since the story doesn't follow the beaten path.
What sets it apart from not just PHONE BOOTH, but also other films [including LIBERTY STANDS STILL] is the fact that Sanju is not out to settle personal scores with the wrongdoers [Irrfan, Gulshan Grover]. He wants to book those who have cheated India by stashing unaccounted money across various banks abroad. In fact, the finale is the best part of the enterprise and stirs up patriotic feelings.
On the flipside, the film tends to get repetitive at times. The middle of the second hour stagnates, albeit for a few minutes. Also, there's a reference to a woman that makes Sanju extremely emotional. One assumes that the woman is linked to Sanju is some way, but that remains a mystery all through.
On the whole, KNOCK OUT is a watchable fare, but its English title and also Sanjay Dutt's box-office pull, which is minimal currently, will act as deterrents. Therefore, the film will require a very strong word of mouth to find a foothold.

Sanjay Dutt moves from Gandhigiri to Freedom
Sanjay Dutt has opened a new chapter in his life. From playing a gangster in a dozen odd films to advocating 'gandhigiri' in Lage Raho Munnabhai, he would now be marching to a different beat with Freedom, a film which would take audience through the journey of India from the 70s to the current times. The film would be directed by Vivek Agnihotri and has already been given a nod of approval by Sanjay Dutt as well as Madhavan. Hunt for the remainder of the principal cast is on.
Confirms Vivek Agnihotri, the man behind Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal (John Abraham, Arshad Warsi, Bipasha Basu) and Chocolate (Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Tanushree Dutta), "Yes, Freedom is happening for sure. The principal cast is more or less finalised and talks with Sanjay Dutt and Madhavan are progressing quite well as they are in the final stages. Sanjay is out of town and I would be meeting him soon after his return to take a closure on the formalities. I am also keen on signing Mohan Lal for the film and have approached him as well. It would be great if he consents because the film will certainly befit his standing as an actor who only does meaningful cinema."
Looking at the subject of Freedom, it does hint of being meaningful cinema with a commercial appeal to it. Describing the film as a political thriller that gives a blow by blow account of modern day India during last three decades, Vivek gets emotional by calling Freedom as a dream come true, "This is a story that I have been waiting to tell for years now. Though Chocolate and Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal happened in the interim, I was always keen to bring Freedom for Indian viewers. The beauty of the subject is that it stays on to be as topical as ever as it starts in the 70s and takes us to the current times. Even if I had to make Freedom in 2020, it will still retain its charm because there would always be newer episodes to tell from the decade gone by."
Apparently, Vivek completely distanced himself from the outside world while writing the film. "I worked with Prasoon Joshi on the script for close to 6 months. After that I went to Himalayas for a couple of months and have just returned after locking the final draft. It has been over two years since Dhan Dhan Dhan Goal and I am raring to go. However, if you ask me whether I am tired then I would say 'No'. Writing Freedom has been such an enriching experience and even if I am required to spend a couple of more years to add more to it, I won't mind."
For Sanjay Dutt, it would be yet another saga other than his under production Lamhaa (directed by Rahul Dholakia) where he would be a part of a topical tale. Though in 2009 he saw success coming his way via a comic route (All The Best), 2010 could well open a new chapter in his life with Freedom following next. In the current decade, most of the films where he has been shown on the right side of the law (Shootout At Lokhandwala, Dus, Kurukshetra, Mission Kashmir) have been successful at the box office. Are we looking at him as a law keeper once again in Freedom?
"It would be too early to divulge his role though I can assure that it pretty much justifies his heavy weight presence", assures Vivek, "He would be present from start to finish of the film and would remain a part of the narrative through all the decades."
