Total Effort Of 11.9 Security Events In The City

Total Effort Of 11.9 Security Events In The City
Addendum to New York, federal and local law enforcement agencies are building up security plans, security plans at the top, so Sunday is not only the 10th anniversary of September 11 attacks, but also a milestone year in a state of alert .
Plans for new power seems to go back at least until May, when a notebook full of ideas of Osama bin Laden to a possible terrorist attack on the anniversary of the attacks was found in his compound in Pakistan. But they intensified last week, when the word was a threat to foreign intelligence, a possible Al Qaeda plot to detonate a car or a truck bomb in New York or Washington.
The defense portfolio includes thousands of police officers, including divers, bomb technicians and cons-snipers, put a lot of days of overtime, the National Guard and intelligence analysts from the FBI. Sunday memorial where the World Trade Center was destroyed, and where a new memorial will be unveiled, will be attended by President Obama, former President George W. Bush and other dignitaries.

Moreover, there is a women's tennis in the final at the U.S. Open, a Mets game, the docking of a warship in Battery Park and several other monuments on 11 September in the region - all need protection.
Saturday, unmistakable security checkpoints in the most important bridges and tunnels, the police and coast guard boats patrolling the waters of Manhattan, and officers armed to the teeth in a busy transportation hub like Pennsylvania Station and Grand Central Station.
Overhead, helicopters buzzing "rotors were heard. And the sound of military aircraft orders as well as before the latest threat was born, began patrolling the skies of New York and Washington, even if James Graybeal, a spokesman for U.S. Northern command, declined to detail the times and routes.
In Lower Manhattan, an agent working with others at a checkpoint at random - randomly asking drivers to leave their cars, open their trunks and describe the content - said the security mission in some way had become almost routine, given the threats in the past 10 years. "We've done this before," the official said, shrugging.
What's Near City Hall, lined metal barricades sidewalks, and a newsletter bomb warned approaching vehicles with its flashing orange letters: A team of bomb squad officers with a shepherd and two labradors patrolled the north end of the World Trade Organization "Avoid downtown." Memorial Centre site.
A few blocks away, along a sidewalk that borders the Hudson River, thousands of people joined together to form a human chain and observe a minute of silence for those who have lost a decade ago. The project, called "Hand in Hand", was organized by the Community Board of the individuals who had no relatives who perished in the attacks and therefore could not take part in the Ground Zero Memorial Sunday.
One participant, Giselle Vazquez, said the news about a possible plot against the city made her nervous, but went anyway. "We have heard the warnings and said:" We must move forward, "said Vazquez, 53,." That's what New York is everything. "
As Sunday approached, local and federal officials have intensified security measures less visible, too. Agents and police detectives of the Joint Task Force of the FBI on terrorism have been working all day on leads, officials from the Intelligence Division were visiting suppliers of goods and services that can be searched by terrorists as ammonium nitrate for a bomb and rental agencies to deliver it.
At police headquarters, a new Joint Operations Center was activated, so that officers 30 offices, such as intelligence, could work face to face with police commanders and city officials from other agencies.
In addition, police were to give greater consideration to the reports of stolen trucks and vans, said Paul J. Browne, spokesman for the ministry. Specifically, the researchers worked to find a Budget rental truck with Oklahoma plates, which was taken from a lot in Jersey City at night by thieves who cut phone lines and alarm systems and security cameras altered. They also try to find two dark vans that were loaded with expensive tools and stolen this month from a construction company with a contract of employment to navigate the West Side Highway near Ground Zero.
"These could be anything other than a industry-savvy thieves, and a desire to build expensive instruments," said Browne. "But they've got more control, thus eliminating the possibility of something more sinister."
As the hours passed, officials met to assess the latest information and evaluate efforts to prevent any attack. On Friday, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly has had reports of progress during his visit to a mosque in upper Manhattan. Saturday, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, the police headquarters, and Obama in Washington met with his national security team, the White House.

Covering The Attack On The World Trade Center

Covering The Attack On The World Trade Center
I just spent in New York during the attacks took place and was the biggest story of my life.
My colleague Doug Kriegel, editor Patch Sherman Oaks, said his 9 / 11 experience.
On the morning of 11 September 2001, I went to breakfast in my brother-in-law, get ready to play a round of golf with him, in Long Island, when suddenly my sister Gail, who had been watching the nest morning TV came running into the kitchen and said, "Wow, the car just crashed into the World Trade Center!"
We ran on TV and I was horrified when about 15 minutes later, another plane crashed in central smoking.
Within minutes, my phone rang. It 'was Paula Madison, general mananger and KNBC in Los Angeles, where I worked as a journalist. Her voice was full of emotion."Kriegel, you are in New York, right?" She said. "Get on this story right away. Come into the air. "
Getting to Manhattan was a major task. The Long Island Expressway was a parking lot immediately to four lanes. The traffic was not moving, because people rushed to Long Island to the city in cars to pick up their relatives and friends who worked in Manhattan, but had no way to go home because the authorities had closed the public transport as a measure of caution.
"Look at the sky, it looks terrible," said Gail was in the car with me, pointing at the horizon the smoke enveloped lower Manhattan.
In fact, the World Trade Center seemed to have been beheaded, and instead of blood was pouring smoke and ash over the huge building, and was feeding through the horizon of downtown New York.
As we approached, a police officer said, "Sorry, you must wait, we're not letting people in Manhattan."
I found route, the 59th Street Bridge, which was guarded by a female officer in a parking meter. I showed her my credentials, news, and was nice enough to let us drive over the bridge.
The bridge itself was filled with people who came out of Manhattan. Thousands of people who came to work that day was forced to leave the city because there was no public transport available.
It 'was a show people dressed in suit and tie office, the evacuation of Manhattan. I remember thinking, this was what it was like when the Nazis marched in Paris in 1940, and thousands of French people were evacuated from the city.
The following 24 hours were a fog. Breathe. A friend of mine told me that she cried when KNBC saw me in the report that "the city of New York was brought to its knees."
I coudn't believe it.
The hardest part of covering this story was just beginning.
In the coming weeks, it is encouraging to see New York on his knees and feet. But in the process, I met hundreds of people who lost relatives in the attack.
Many of them continued to maintain the hope that somehow her parents were still alive, perhaps in a hospital room somewhere in the city.
They hold pictures of their loved ones and ask for the journalists, have you seen my husband or mother or brother traveled to the city?
It 'was heartbreaking to tell them that I had not seen the photograph of the person.
Never forget the funeral of a firefighter in the Bronx. It was an Italian neighborhood, and the man who died trying to save others was the father of two children.
People were furious with the service.
Later, one of the older men in the neighborhood began to talk to me. There was fury in his eyes as he has in store on the corner of the busy street, we were standing.
"See that place," he said angrily. "The people who work in that store were cheering when the World Trade Center was attacked."
"We will visit them," he swore.
The next two weeks, I continued to cover a variety of other stories about the terrorist attacks.
I never found out if they paid those people to visit.
Of course, the U.S. military visited the perpetrators of the attacks, and we are still paying.
Two weeks ago I went to Ground Zero. There was a large crowd around the gleaming skyscraper that is under construction there. Many of the visitors were clearly foreign, as Muslims speak Arabic.
Despite the pounding of construction noise, there was a sense of quiet harmony on the site. The city and its inhabitants had been recovered, and were preparing to remember.

Progressive Christians To Join The Dispute Without The Clergy To The 9 / 11 Events

Progressive Christians To Join The Dispute Without The Clergy To The 9 / 11 Events
(CNN) - A handful of progressive Christian leaders have joined the chorus of religious leaders for the most conservative critics of the New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has left the clergy of the event 9 / 11 the memory of this weekend to ground zero.
But there's a twist.
In addition to criticizing Bloomberg, progressive religious leaders are also aimed at conservative leaders who have criticized Bloomberg in recent days, claiming that these criticisms are fueling the division at a time that calls for national unity. The group plans a press conference near Ground Zero on Friday to emphasize that "religion should not be excluded from the 9 / 11 memories," but also "to encourage unity, not division, the 9 / 11" according to a news release Tuesday.
Friday press conference, overlooking Ground Zero, will feature Jim Wallis, head of evangelical group Sojourners social justice, the Rev. Floyd Flake, a prominent New York priest and former Democratic congressman, and Geoff Tunnicliffe, head of the World Evangelical Alliance.
"Mayor Bloomberg has made a decision understandable, but regrettable," said Tim King, communications director of Sojourners, an evangelical Christian social justice group that helps plan the press conference.
"Religion and religious leaders have caused a lot of unnecessary conflicts and contradictions," King wrote in an e-mail. "But do not completely avoid religion to reach the heart of the problem."
"The best answer is in religion," King said. "And for those religious leaders who are causing controversy about this decision ... the media will show exactly why Mayor Bloomberg does not want first."
From the Wall Street Journal first reported last month that the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 anniversary event - which will be attended by President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush and other leaders - will exclude priests and prayers formal, conservative Christians have vented anger.
"The gag rule priests will be introduced to avoid" disagreements over the religious leaders participating. "But since when is it a problem?" Wrote Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights in the last email to his supporters.
"Many members of the clergy, one Imam spoke at an interfaith service at Yankee Stadium after the attacks, and they managed to remove it without problem," he writes. "Why should it be different this time?"
Bloomberg's office defended the mayor's decision in the clergy.
"The ceremony was designed in collaboration with 9 / 11 families with a mix of measures that are spiritual, historical and personal nature," Evelyn Erskine, a spokeswoman for Bloomberg, said in an e-mail to CNN late August.
"It was widely supported in the past 10 years and disagreements rather than the religious leaders involved, we want to stay focused on our memorial to the family of those who died," she writes.
There were 10 ceremonies at Ground Zero in New York, pause and remember the events of 9 / 11, one six months after the attack, and September 11 of each year.
Spirituality and religion have been reserved for moments of silence in these events.
During the ceremonies preceding four moments of silence to mark when each tower was hit, and when each tower fell.
For the ceremony this year, organizers have added two moments of silence to recognize the strike on the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
"This year, six moments of silence allows time for personal introspection and religious identity of each individual," said Erskine.
The whole city will be the prayers of other events leading to Sept. 11.

Gloria Steinem Calls To Boycott TV "Playboy Club"

Gloria Steinem Calls To Boycott TV "Playboy Club"
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Veteran rights activist Gloria Steinem of women, said Friday he expects viewers to boycott "The Playboy Club," calling the 1960 club tasteless and far from glamorous places represented in the fair.

"Clearly," The Playboy Club "will not be accurate. It was the tackiest place on earth. It was not glamorous at all," Steinem told Reuters in an interview.
Steinem, one of America's leading crusaders for women's rights for 40 years, went to work undercover for Playboy Bunny in New York City Club in 1963 and wrote a novel exposing some of the burden for women who worked there.
"When I worked there and writing the outline, one of the things that had to change because of my presentation was the need for all the rabbits, which was just a waitress, after an internal review and testing for sexually transmitted diseases" he said.
Steinem said she sees the Emmy Award-winning drama "Mad Men", also set in the 1960s as "a net plus because it shows the world in early 1960 with a degree of realism."
But, he added, "I expect the" Playboy Club "is a less clear, and I hope that people boycott. Simply is not telling the truth about the era."
"The Playboy Club" in the first Playboy Club in Chicago, made its debut in September as one of the cornerstones of the fall season of new NBC television.

Speaking to television reporters last week in Los Angeles, network executives, producers and cast of the series have all rejected the view of critics who believe that the series will idealize the porn industry and is degrading to modern women.
NBC Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt called the show "very funny soap opera," while executive producer Chad Hodge told reporters that the TV was "all about empowering women to be what they want to be."
An NBC affiliate in Salt Lake City, has said it will not broadcast the show, but NBC says it is not expected to follow.

Steinem, 77, said Friday that it was important to reject the TV series, even if it is set 40 years ago.
"It normalizes a dominant ideas about sex liabilities. Then it normalizes prostitution and male domination ... I just know that over the years, women have called me and told me horror stories on their experiences at Playboy Club at Playboy Mansion, "she said.
Steinem spoke before the premiere of an HBO documentary on his life, "Gloria: In your own words," August 15.
