Circa Skate Shoe Fabric and Sole Innovations

Circa (more accurately C1rca) have been operational since 1999, when they convinced Pro-Skater Chad Muska to help develop a landmark in shoe design: the CM901.


Their philosophy has always been summed up by the phrase 'committed to skateboarding' and the current team includes Ryan Gallant, Emmanuel Guzman and Tony Tave among others.
They have three distinct sections to their skate shoe business;

Mainline- the vast majority of shoes come under this category and has a large amount of lifestyle as well as core skate shoes.

Combat- This is the core skateboard shoe collection, and the shoes been designed from the ground up to reflect skateboarders exact needs.

Select- Here Circa allow their designers to have more expression, and the fabrics and construction of the shoes reflects this.

The 99 slim is a great example of Circa's select collection; it shows the heritage of an old skool high top, but fires into the modern age with a super-lightweight EVA midsole that is much lighter than it's close relative, the 99 Vulc. As well as this, the slim exhibits the features that make it very much a part of the 'select collection'. Circa continue to push the boundaries of the development of skate shoes with the help of their pro team. Ryan Gallant, the 28 year old California native has been skating for 20 years and contributed strongly to the development of his own model, the Gallant. It features micro-perforated suede to help with breathability and comfort, as well as being a very snug fit. It is Vulcanised too, a feature that has become more and more popular in shoes over the last 10 years, possibly due to the resurgence of Converse.

The term 'Vulcanised' simply refers to a vulcanised rubber sole, that generally sits 1.5cm from the base of the sole and continues around the diameter of the shoe. It is very hard wearing, and seems to last well in board sports even with the use of abrasive skateboard griptape and spiked bmx pedals.

'Fusiongrip'TM; was developed as a highly grippy rubber compound and tread pattern to complement many of Circa's collection, especially the core range. A good example of a 'Fusiongrip'TM shoe is the Heat Low, which also has a cupsole constructed sole. This sole is thicker and more cushioned than most Vulc shoes, and some skateboarders prefer it, due to the high impact landings they experience. Bruised heels aren't cool.

Circa have also been deliberately different in Fabric choices than their closest rivals, Etnies and Vans. The choice of plaid in mainline skate shoes was implemented by Circa at the outset of its popularity, allowing them to capitalise on a relatively new trend with lower competition.

They have also experimented with high quality leather in differing colourways, as well as triple velcro (the Lopez) and various incarnations of suede.

Chemicals in indoor swimming pools may increase cancer risk

Swimming in indoor chlorinated pools may induce genotoxicity (DNA damage that may lead to cancer) as well as respiratory effects, but the positive health effects of swimming can be maintained by reducing pool levels of the chemicals behind these potential health risks, according to a new study published in a set of three articles online September 12 ahead of print in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP).

This study is the first to provide a comprehensive characterization of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in an indoor pool environment and the first to study the genotoxicity of exposure to these chemicals among swimmers in an indoor chlorinated pool.

DBPs form in pool water from reactions between disinfectants such as chlorine and organic matter that is either present naturally or is introduced by swimmers, such as sweat, skin cells, and urine.
Previous epidemiologic studies have found an association between exposure to DBPs in drinking water and risk of bladder cancer, and one such study has found this association for dermal/inhalational exposure such as occurs during showering, bathing, or swimming.

The new study details a comprehensive investigation of DBPs and mutagenicity of water samples collected from two indoor pools, one disinfected with chlorine, the other with bromine.

In addition, short-term changes in biomarkers of genotoxicity and respiratory effects were studied in swimmers who swam in the chlorinated pool. No previous studies have combined investigations of the mutagenicity (ability to cause permanent DNA mutations) of pool water with a comprehensive chemical characterization of the water and studies of human exposures, the authors stated.

Evidence of genotoxic effects were seen in 49 healthy adults after they swam for 40 minutes in the chlorinated pool. Specifically, researchers found increases in two genotoxicity biomarkers relative to the concentration of the most common types of DBPs in exhaled breath, which were used as a measure of the swimmers’ exposures.

The biomarkers that increased were micronuclei in blood lymphocytes, which have been associated with cancer risk in healthy subjects, and urine mutagenicity, which is a biomarker of exposure to genotoxic agents.

Detailed measurements were also made of the most common exhaled DBPs (trihalomethanes) in air around the pool and in exhaled breath of the swimmers before and after swimming. Researchers measured several biomarkers of respiratory effects after swimming and found changes in only one-a slight increase in serum CC16, which suggests an increase in lung epithelium permeability. This result was explained by the effects of exercise itself as well as exposure to DBPs. Further research is needed to sort out the clinical relevance of this acute change, the researchers stated.

In addition, the authors identified more than 100 DBPs in the pool waters, some never reported previously in swimming pool water and/or chlorinated drinking water. In vitro assays showed that the swimming pool water was mutagenic at levels similar to that of drinking water but was more cytotoxic (can kill cells at a lower concentration) than drinking water.

Angelina Jolie’s Red Carpet Hair by David Babaii

Angelina Jolie – sizzling in Atelier Versace – brings a little flavor to a photocall for her latest film, Salt, in Cancun, Mexico, last week. The spy thriller, her first movie since 2008, hits theaters on July 23.
All eyes were on Angelina Jolie at the international press junket for her highly-anticipated film, “Salt,” in Cancun, Mexico today.

Truly breathtaking, she wore an elegant, white strapless dress with hair that was smooth, sleek and natural-looking.  It was styled by David Babaii, who created her beautiful new style with bangs.

This is how David achieved the look:
“The humid climate and tropical breezes of Cancun presented unique styling challenges.  After cutting the bangs a bit shorter and chipping into them so they appeared even softer and swept away, I dampened her hair and applied Moroccanoil Treatment to protect it during blow drying, prevent frizz in this a very damp environment, and lock in weightless, natural-looking shine.

Next, I applied Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to create soft hold, and smooth any bends in her texture.  I then made a side part, sweeping the bangs to the left, and created three sections: two on the side and a larger one in the back.  I used a large round brush to blow each section smooth.

To complete the look, I manipulated the hair and tousled it for a natural, bohemian touch.  I finished with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray for strong hold that kept the style in place but allowed it to move naturally.”

Upcoming Attraction!

Just read a very small article that my absolute favorite Stephen King novel, The Stand, is headed for the big screen! Warner Bros and CBS are partnering to put it together.

Don't get too excited now.  The project is literally in the first stages. According to the article I read, writers haven't even come together to adapt the script yet. And script development itself could take years :-(  Let's hope it doesn't.
