After learning she was pregnant with conjoined twins, Spaten has been controlled in the center of the fetus for eight weeks. The boys were Spaten prenatal diagnosis by ultrasound at 25 weeks gestation, then returned to Mari, who has developed a plan of care delivered and boys at 34 weeks gestation by Caesarean section on Jan. 24 at Memphis Regional Medical Center.
Seven hours after birth, the boys were transferred to the neonatal unit Le Bonheur intensive care. Born joined the division of the spine and the rectum, the muscles and nerves, the twins are one of only six ever recorded in Memphis. Joshua is on the left, and Jacob is right.
Joshua and Jacob are twins pygopagus, which is a rare form of reunited twins to return to the pelvis and lumbar spine, each with separate hearts, heads and limbs. This represents only 15% of conjoined twins. The boys have spent seven months in the happiness of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit prior to separation.
