Fred Hollows (1929-1993) dedicated his life to improving indigenous health here in Australia. He also pioneered the introduction of modern cataract surgery to developing countries. Five months before his death, he set up the Fred Hollows Foundation.
The organization has continued to work to restore sight to the people of countries such as Australia, Asia, China, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, North Korea, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Currently working with blindness prevention organizations in over 19 countries.
They work regardless of danger and political situation.
Through reducing the cost of cataract operations to as little as $25 in some developing countries, Fred Hollows Foundation have helped to restore the sight of more than 1,000,000 people worldwide.
In 2007 alone, Fred Hollows Foundation performed 143,759 cataract operations and other sight saving interventions. They provided eye care for over 1.2 million people in some of the worlds poorest regions, trained 3,284 eye health workers and supplied over $1.3 million worth of essential medical equipment
To think, one life changing operation can be carried out for the cost of $25... That's one meal at a restaurant, or 2 tickets to the cinema. Imaging how many lives could be saved for the price of purchasing one pair of shoes....
