Dolphins Among The Teams Talking To Kyle Orton
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Miami Dolphins are among a handful of teams participating in contract negotiations with the Denver Broncos quarter Kyle Orton, who expects to be exchanged at the end of the week.
According to a source team, Orton is on the wish list for the General Manager Jeff Ireland quarterbacks, would increase the Dolphins roster. But another source said that the seven years of experience, which is due to $ 9000000 in 2011, is looking for a contract of long term extension that pays him more than $ 6 million a year.
The source said Orton wants to ensure that it is "an asset more than a last resort."
The Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks were one of the teams bidding for his services on Tuesday.
The Vikings are finalizing an agreement with Washington on Donovan McNabb. The Cardinals are working on a possible exchange for Kevin Kolb Eagles backup, and Seattle should sign Tarvaris Jackson. No offer can be completed before 6:00 p.m. on Friday, when free agents can sign official. But trades can be executed, and extensions granted.
The Dolphins seem to be the harbinger of Orton, who joined in 2009, Brandon Marshall, who caught 101 passes for 1,120 yards and 10 touchdowns in 15 games they played together.
Orton, who turns 28 in November, has started 61 NFL games with a 32-29 record.
Orton and Marshall are still friends, and Marshall would like to see a meeting of his former Broncos teammate, who was replaced by standout Florida Gators, Tim Tebow, Denver, 2010 first round selection.
Last season, Orton completed 58 percent of his passes, throwing for 3.653 yards and 20 touchdowns in 13 games. He published an evaluation 87.5 quarterback last season and 86.8 in his first season with the Broncos, who acquired from Chicago in 2009 in trade for Jay Cutler.
The Dolphins plan to add a veteran quarterback to compete with Chad Henne in the first place to start, but the options have narrowed. If the Dolphins pass Orton the best options would be free agents Marc Bulger, Brady Quinn and Vince Young and Matt Moore, who probably will be released by Tennessee on Thursday.
It is also possible that quarterback Jake Delhomme (Cleveland) and Derek Anderson (Arizona) will be released in the coming days.
Orton looked like a safer option than the young, and one with more benefits than Bulger or Moore. But to make a significant financial commitment over the years and money would probably be guaranteed anoint as the successor to Henne, unless the owner keeps his starting place in a battle training camp.
Henne, who is 13-14 as a starter, has one year left on the contract he signed as the team from 2008 second round pick.
DL McDaniel ready to return
Veteran defensive lineman Tony McDaniel re-sign with the Dolphins, a source close to the team said.
McDaniel, a defensive tackle who was a regular rotation Dolphins defensive line during the two seasons, has accepted a two-year contract that pays him $ 3 million season, sources said.
McDaniel finished with 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2010. It should remain in rotation on the defensive line, competing for playing time with the likes of Randy Starks, Kendall Langford, Phillip Merling and Jared Odrick.
McDaniel became the NFL Rookie undrafted free agent in 2006 with Jacksonville. He spent his first three seasons there before the Dolphins acquired him for 7-round draft choice before the 2009 season.
